Fund Raising For Children's Hospital
Louisa Cary Childrens Ward is an acute ward at Torbay Hospital that cares for children aged between 0-18 years, with various medical, surgical and orthopaedic conditions. The fish tank was built 17 years ago and takes pride of place at the main reception on the ward. The tank is seen by everyone as they walk onto the ward, and is ‘famous’ amongst the staff in the hospital, patients, parents & families.
Unfortunately the tank is in need of replacing! The acrylic joins have become structurally week and the aquarium has started leaking. The Louisa Cary fundraising team Faye, Jane & Rachel are currently trying to raise money to do this. The cost for a new aquarium and revamp is £3930.
Aquatics South West have supplied and looked after the fish/tank for 13 years and will be helping to fund-raise. The fish tank is a clinical need on the ward. It’s used as a distraction technique when children are distressed & feeling unwell. When entering the ward children can feel anxious & unsure of the surroundings, but as soon as they spot the tank & our popular personalities such as ‘Crabby Ali’ & ‘Francesca’ the kissing fish their nerves are eased and they relax. The tank also helps babies go off to sleep and older patients that may suffer with stress or anxiety. The fish tank is calming and can help with this.
Aquatics South West aim to revamp the aquarium with exciting features such as making the aquarium interactive for the children,
